A Refutation Addressed to Ibn Harithah:
How Could You Neglect the True Clarification of the Quran, Only to Contend with Me over the Aquiline Form of a Nose
?
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Peace be upon the Messengers, and all praise belongs to Allaah, Lord of the worlds. And unto you, O Zayd ibn Harithah (a pseudonymous appellation) although I am fully aware that I bear a striking resemblance to my grandfather (Prophet Mohammed), I do not contend with you by means of visions, for visions pertain solely to the one who beholds them. Yet I pose a question directed to Zayd ibn Harithah ,though he resembles the true Zayd ibn Harithah, the noble Companion, in naught whatsoever. Let us suppose that the Messenger of Allaah had left behind a four-by-six photograph of the Awaited Mahdi. Then, one day, the people discovered a man upon whom that photograph corresponded with absolute exactitude, whereupon a group proclaimed: ‘O people, rejoice, for the Awaited Mahdi has indeed appeared!’ Thereafter, the scholars of the Ummah examined him and found the likeness perfectly aligned. Thus they said unto him: ‘If you are truly the Imam Mahdi, then judge between us concerning that wherein we have long differed. Teach us the true clarification of the Qur’an, its decisive verses and its allegorical ones alike. Unveil for us its hidden mysteries, and bring forth knowledge that is accepted by reason and sound intellect.’ Yet the man replied: ‘I possess no such knowledge.’ And so, despite the image corresponding to him in every detail, he proved incapable of judging between the scholars of the Ummah, even though they had initially agreed that he was the Awaited Mahdi merely because the likeness matched him, as did the name, whether Mohammed ibn ‘Abdullaah or Mohammed ibn al-Hasan al-‘Askari
.
Nevertheless, he could neither reconcile the disputes between Sunni and Shi‘a nor judge between them regarding that over which they differed. Helpless and bereft of proof, he stood incapable. Consequently, both Sunni and Shi‘a turned away from him after once gathering around him, for although the photograph and the name corresponded, whether Mohammed ibn al-Hasan or Mohammed ibn ‘Abdullaah, they ultimately found him devoid of the sciences of true clarification concerning the Book. Nor could he judge between them regarding their disputes, and thus they abandoned him, since Allaah had not supported him with the authority of knowledge. Therefore, the mere correspondence of image and name neither avails nor satisfies in the least. So fear Allaah, O man.
I swear by the Almighty, He who brings the bones back to life after they have become dust, that the decisive proof is the clear clarification of the Great Qur’an. Whoever seeks to contend with me through the Quran, I shall overcome through knowledge and authority drawn from the Quran itself, not through the interpretations of commentators; rather, I present to you the proof of clarification from the Qur’an itself. How ignorant you are! How, then, do you neglect the true clarification of the Quran and dispute with me concerning ‘the aquiline nose’, while you are unaware even of its precise meaning, and your own scholars are divided in its definition? I shall not contend with you regarding the aquiline nose, even though I know it corresponds to my own likeness, for I am fully aware that people resemble one another. And Allaah has not made the proof lie in physical resemblance, nor in names, nor in dreams seen in sleep; rather, the conclusive proof lies in knowledge.
For this reason, Allaah the Most High said:
﴿ فَمَنْ حَاجَّكَ فِيهِ مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ ﴾
صدق
الله العظيم [آل عمران].
— Surah Aal ‘Imraan (3:61)
And that is because the decisive argument rests upon knowledge. And for this reason, Allaah the Most High said:
— Surah Aal ‘Imraan (3:61)
And peace be upon the Messengers, and all praise belongs to Allaah, Lord of the worlds. Your brother: Imam al-Mahdi, Nasser Mohammed Al-Yamani.
