My Dear Questioner, Indeed, Those Who Associate Partners with Allah are Divided into Three Categories…
Peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you, upon us, and upon all Muslims. Peace be upon the messengers, and all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds…
My dear questioner, indeed, those who associate partners with Allah are divided into three categories:
Firstly: believers who commit Shirk/Idolatry. It is confirmed in the Word of Allah, The Exalted:
[Qur’an, Surah: Yusuf, 12:103-111]
In fact, those individuals believe in Allah, yet direct acts of worship towards His close servants, invoking them as mediators so that they might bring them closer to Allah. However, Allah will punish those believers who associated partners with Allah, but He will not punish His honoured servants who were taken as lords besides Him. Verily, those believers exaggerated the status of those honoured servants with no right and asserted that they would be their intercessors on the Day of Judgement—the day when all people will stand before the Lord of the worlds. Indeed, those reverend figures never knew how later generations magnified them, and how they exaggerated their status beyond the truth, until later generations ended up worshipping them besides Allah. Therefore, those close servants of Allah—among the prophets and the honoured ones—were unaware that they were being worshipped besides Allah until the day on which all people will stand before the Lord of the worlds. They will then disown those idolaters and reject being worshipped besides Allah. Allah, The Exalted, said:
[Qur’an, Surah: Yunus, 10:28-30]
Meaning: those honoured servants will reject being worshipped by those who had exceeded the bounds in honouring them beyond the truth. It is confirmed in the Word of Allah, The Exalted:
[Qur’an, Surah: Maryam, 19:81-82]
Indeed, those are the ones who believe in Allah yet associate partners with Him from among Allah’s close servants—as they invoke them besides Allah, claiming that they would be their intercessors before Allah. Allah, The Exalted, said:
[Qur’an, Surah: al-Anbiya', 21:24-27]
These are the close servants of Allah—among the prophets and His honoured allies. After their death, some believers exalted and magnified them, generation after generation, until they made them a myth by exaggerating their status beyond the truth, then they invoked them besides Allah. Allah, The Exalted, said:
[Qur’an, Surah: Al-Isra, 17:54-57]
Verily, Allah has sent the prophets from among jinn and mankind to their own peoples to bring them out from worshipping servants to worshipping the Lord of the servants—by arguing with them through the miraculous signs of their Lord. Allah, The Exalted, said:
[Qur’an, Surah: al-An`am, 6:130]
In fact, Idols are originally statues crafted to represent the honoured servants of Allah in each nation. However, the secret behind worshipping those idols became lost over generations. Then, Allah sent His messengers—who asked the idolaters about the reason why they worshipped such idols, yet the reason had already vanished from them. Thus, they answered that their fathers knew the secret of worshipping those idols—claiming that their fathers had more knowledge and wisdom than them, and that they only followed their fathers' steps. And Allah, The Exalted, said:
[Qur’an, Surah: ash-Shu`ara', 26:69-82]
Thus, Abraham did not seek intercession from anyone, and that is why he said:
[Qur’an, Surah: ash-Shu`ara', 26:82]
Hence, those who used to worship idols turned the argument back against their fathers—who had led them astray into idol-worship. Indeed, on the Day of Judgement, each nation will turn the argument back against its fathers who would reply: “we had led them astray just as we ourselves went astray because we had followed our fathers.” Therefore, each nation will cast the blame upon its preceding fathers, until the blame reaches the original nation that knows the secret of worshipping such statues—who will acknowledge that they created those statues in honour of the revered servants of Allah. Here, these revered servants themselves will renounce them. Allah, The Exalted, said:
[Qur’an, Surah: al-Qasas, 28:62-63]
Thus, regarding those who would say:
[Qur’an, Surah: al-Qasas, 28:63]
They will cast the blame upon their fathers, and their fathers will cast the blame upon their preceding fathers, until the secret of idol-worship is traced back to the original generation—who will confess that they had led the later generations astray because they had exaggerated the status of the honoured servants of Allah to the point that they had crafted statues representing them. Thereupon, the honoured servants themselves will reject their people’s devotion, in line with the Word of Allah, The Exalted:
[Qur’an, Surah: al-Qasas, 28:62-63]
Truly, they were worshipping them so that they might bring them closer to Allah, invoking them to intercede on their behalf before Allah. Allah, The Exalted, said:
[Qur’an, Surah: Yunus, 10:18]
Also, Allah, The Exalted, said:
[Qur’an, Surah: az-Zumar, 39:3]
So, O people, you have now come to know the reason behind associating partners with Allah—it is exaggerating the status of the honoured servants of Allah, whether these servants are of mankind or of jinn.
As for others, they have associated partners with Allah by worshipping the jinn besides Allah, having been deceived by the devils. And regarding how others fell into worshipping the jinn, it is because the devils among the jinn appeared to them, hiding their true identity; rather, they claimed to be of the close angels of The Most Gracious. They commanded those people to prostrate before them to draw them closer to their Lord, so, they worshipped them besides Allah. On the Day of Judgement, Allah will question those people regarding what they used to worship besides Him, and they will reply: "We used to worship Your close angels so that they might bring us closer to You". Thereupon, Allah, The Exalted, will ask His angels, saying:
[Qur’an, Surah: Saba', 34:40-41]
O community of Shia, Sunnah, and Jama’ah: abandon taking intercessors before Allah. Indeed, whoever hopes for the intercession of any servant before Allah, he has certainly committed Shirk/associated partners with Allah; and he will find no protector or helper other than Allah. Therefore, it is better for you to hold fast to the clear and decisive verses of the Qur’an—for they are the core verses of the Book. And abandon the ambiguous verses regarding intercession—those verses which you cannot fully comprehend. For indeed, you do not have encompassing knowledge of them, so leave them aside. And hold fast to the clear and decisive verses of the Book—for they are the Mother verses of the Book. Allah, the Exalted, said:
[Qur’an, Surah: al-An`am, 6:51]
And Allah, The Exalted, said:
[Qur’an, Surah: al-Infitar, 82:13-19]
Also, Allah, The Exalted, said:
[Qur’an, Surah: az-Zumar, 39:43-47]
Actually, it is only Allah’s mercy that would intercede for you against His anger—if Allah wills. So, turn in repentance to Allah, The Most Merciful of the merciful. For who could possibly be more merciful to you than Allah—The Most Merciful of the merciful—that he would intercede for you before Allah? How then could anyone be more merciful than Allah to His servants? will you not then fear Allah!
Peace be upon the messengers, and all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
