Explaining the Two Types of Hasrah Mentioned in the Clear Verses of the Qur'an for All Mankind and Jinn
Translator's note: The word Hasrah (Arabic: حَسرة)
has been transliterated rather than translated because it carries more than one meaning in the Quran. Depending on the context, it may refer to regret or sorrow. Since no single English word fully captures both meanings, the Arabic term Hasrah has been retained throughout this work.
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.Peace and blessings be upon all the Prophets and Messengers of Allaah, and upon their righteous families, from the first of them to the last of them, Mohammed, the Messenger of Allaah. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and upon the Messengers of Allaah who came before him. We make no distinction between any of His Messengers, and to Him we submit.
O my beloved for the sake of Allaah, Mujtahid lil-Haqq, I see that you debate the supporters of the truth and strive against them with falsehood in a great striving. At times, you present your questions in a manner that appears logical on the surface to those who inquire. Therefore, it has become incumbent upon us to establish the argument against you from the decisive proof of Allaah contained in the Great Quran, and to strive against you with it in a great striving.
And I observe that many Muslim scholars have confined Hasrah, both linguistically and terminologically, to only one meaning: regret. Consequently, they rejected Allaah’s declaration in the decisive verses of His Book concerning the Hasrah of sorrow within Himself for His servants, as stated in the words of Allaah the Exalted:
{إِن كَانَتْ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ خَامِدُونَ ﴿29﴾ يَا حَسْرَةً عَلَى الْعِبَادِ مَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ ﴿30﴾ أَلَمْ يَرَوْا كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّنَ الْقُرُونِ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ ﴿31﴾ وَإِن كُلٌّ لَّمَّا جَمِيعٌ لَّدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَ ﴿32﴾}
صدق الله العظيم
Surah: Ya-Sin—Chapter: 36—Verses: 29–32
And then the Imam Mahdi Nasser Mohammed al-Yamani responds to all those who inquire, saying: “O assembly of believers in the Lord of all the worlds, who believe that He is truly the Most Merciful of those who show mercy, and who believe in His Book, the Great Quran, here is the true clarification. Indeed, I speak nothing about Allaah except the truth. First, I shall clarify the meaning of Hasrah in the Great Quran. I derive from the clear verses of the Great Quran that Hasrah within the soul is of two kinds: either a Hasrah of regret or a Hasrah of sorrow. And I shall bring forth the clear proof to explain Hasrah within the soul. For Hasrah within the soul is either regret, or Hasrah within the soul is sorrow.” And we now come to the proof of the Hasrah of regret, and you will find it in the clear verses of the Book of Allaah in the words of Allaah the Exalted:
{أَن تَقُولَ نَفْسٌ يَا حَسْرَتَىٰ عَلَىٰ مَا فَرَّطتُ فِي جَنبِ اللَّـهِ وَإِن كُنتُ لَمِنَ السَّاخِرِينَ ﴿٥٦﴾}
صدق الله العظيم
Surah: Az-Zumar—Chapter: 39—Verse: 56
And this is the Hasrah of regret within themselves over what they neglected regarding their Lord. The regretful Hasrah comes upon them after Allaah destroys them with His torment, and they realize that they had denied the Messenger of their Lord in truth. Thus, the Hasrah of regret arises within them over their disbelief in Allaah and His Messengers. In line with the words of Allaah the Exalted:
{قَالَ عَمَّا قَلِيلٍ لَيُصْبِحُنَّ نَادِمِينَ (40) فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ بالحقّ فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاء فَبُعْداً لِّلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ (41)}
صدق الله العظيم
(Surah Al-Mu’minun, Chapter 23, Verses 40–41)
And I now come to the clarification of the Hasrah of sorrow and grief for others, and I find it in the words of Allaah the Exalted:
{فَلا تَذْهَبْ نَفْسُكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَسَرَاتٍ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ}
صدق الله العظيم
Surah: Fatir—Chapter: 35—Verse: 8
Indeed, Hasrah within the soul regarding others signifies sorrow and grief. In line with the Words of Allaah the Exalted:
{فَلَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ نَفْسَكَ عَلَى آثَارِهِمْ إِنْ لَمْ يُؤْمِنُوا بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَسَفًا}
صدق الله العظيم
Surah :Al-Kahf— Chapter: 18— Verse:6
And an example of the Hasrah of Prophet of Allaah Ya‘qub over his son Yusuf, peace be upon them both, is the Hasrah of sorrow and grief over his lost son. And Allaah the Exalted says:
{وَتَوَلَّى عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَا أَسَفَى عَلَى يُوسُفَ وَابْيَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ}
صدق الله العظيم
Surah :Yusuf—Chapter :12—Verse: 84
And likewise, the Hasrah of Allaah upon His servants is nothing but a Hasrah of sorrow within Himself over His servants after the Torment seized them. And Allaah the Exalted says:
{إِن كَانَتْ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ خَامِدُونَ ﴿29﴾ يَا حَسْرَةً عَلَى الْعِبَادِ مَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ ﴿30﴾ أَلَمْ يَرَوْا كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّنَ الْقُرُونِ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ ﴿31﴾ وَإِن كُلٌّ لَّمَّا جَمِيعٌ لَّدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَ ﴿32﴾}
صدق الله العظيم
Surah :Ya-Sin— Chapter:36—Verses: 29–32
It becomes clear to those who inquire that Hasrah in the decisive Qur’an contains two distinct clarifications: either it is a Hasrah of regret within the soul, or it is a Hasrah of sorrow for others.
Thus, it becomes clear to you the clarification of the Hasrah of the servants within themselves, as regret over what they neglected concerning their Lord, when they find themselves in loss and in the Fire—except whom Allaah wills. Likewise, it becomes clear to the inquirers that the Hasrah of Allaah upon His servants is a Hasrah of sorrow and grief within Himself over them.
In line with the Words of Allaah the Exalted:
{إِن كَانَتْ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ خَامِدُونَ ﴿29﴾ يَا حَسْرَةً عَلَى الْعِبَادِ مَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ ﴿30﴾ أَلَمْ يَرَوْا كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّنَ الْقُرُونِ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ ﴿31﴾ وَإِن كُلٌّ لَّمَّا جَمِيعٌ لَّدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَ ﴿32﴾}
صدق الله العظيم
Surah:Ya-Sin—Chapter:36—Verses: 29–32
So has the truth become clear to you from falsehood, my beloved for the sake of Allaah, Mujtahid lil-Haqq?And beautiful patience is ours regarding you. I am more rightly guided than you in way and more upright in speech. And I order the suspension of the account of Mujtahid lil-Haqq until he responds to me concerning the clarification of the two Hasrahs in the decisive Qur’an. And peace be upon the Messengers, and all praise belongs to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds.
And perhaps Mujtahid lil-Haqq may wish to say: “O Nasser Mohammed al-Yamani, let us assume that you have established the argument against Mujtahid lil-Haqq with the truth regarding the clarification of the two Hasrahs in the clear Qur’an—that they are either the Hasrah of regret within the human soul over what he has done, or the Hasrah of sorrow within the soul over what has befallen other people. The question, O Nasser Mohammed, is this: does this mean that Allah will continue to grieve over His punished servants in Hell?”
Thereupon the Imam Mahdi Nasser Mohammed al-Yamani responds to all those who inquire, saying: Yes, by my Lord Allaah, indeed my Lord has sorrow within Himself over His servants who regret what they neglected concerning their Lord. Rather, He has been sorrowful over them for thousands of years, from the very moment of their Hasrah over what they neglected concerning their Lord. Indeed, the sorrow of Allaah over them is greater than the sorrow of a mother over her child when she sees him crying out in the Fire of Hell, even if he had disobeyed her for a thousand years; for her sorrow for her child is immense due to the mercy placed in her heart for him. Yet the sorrow of Allaah over His servant is even greater, for He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.However, they wronged themselves by despairing of the mercy of their Lord.
At this point, people of understanding pause for a moment of deep reflection, thinking with reason and logic. Then one of them says: “O Nasser Mohammed, now that it has become clear to us the immense sorrow of Allaah over those who wrong themselves, why did Allaah create us?” Thereupon, Imam Mahdi Nasser Mohammed al-Yamani responds:
You will find the answer in the decisive Book in the words of Allaah the Exalted:
{وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الجنّ وَالْإِنس إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ}
صدق الله العظيم [Surah Adh-Dhariyat: 56]
Then they strive earnestly to follow the guidance of the Ummah so that they may become grateful, and thus they begin working toward achieving the goal of attaining the pleasure within their Lord. Thereupon, the possessor of knowledge of the Book responds to the people of understanding, saying:
Thus, you have taken the good pleasure of the Most Merciful as your ultimate goal, and you strive toward the opposite goal of those who incur wrath from among the devils of jinn and mankind.
For they too have a goal connected to the self of the Most Merciful, just as you have a goal connected to it. As for the goal of the devils—within the self of Allaah—it is to bring about the anger of Allaah upon all His servants, and they detest His pleasure. Therefore, the devils of jinn and mankind are not satisfied with their own state of being under wrath; rather, they strive to bring about the anger of Allaah upon all His servants. And since the devils of jinn and mankind have come to know the words of Allaah the Exalted:
{إِن تَكْفُرُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنكُمْ وَلَا يَرْضَىٰ لِعِبَادِهِ الْكُفْرَ وَإِن تَشْكُرُوا يَرْضَهُ لَكُمْ}
[Surah Az-Zumar: 7]
They therefore strive by every means and strategy to achieve their aim, which is to prevent the pleasure of Allaah for His servants.
And the path of Satan and his followers toward achieving this goal is that the servants of Allaah should not be grateful. For this reason, Allaah has clarified for you the objective of Satan in the verse of the Qur’an:
{ثُمَّ لَآتِيَنَّهُم مِّن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ وَعَنْ أَيْمَانِهِمْ وَعَنْ شَمَائِلِهِمْ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَاكِرِينَ (17)}
صدق الله العظيم [Surah Al-A‘raf: 17]
Therefore, Satan strives to mislead the servants so that they do not become grateful, and thus the good pleasure of Allaah is not attained for them. He calls them to disbelief, for Allaah does not approve disbelief for His servants. In confirmation of the Words of Allaah the Exalted:
{إِن تَكْفُرُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنكُمْ وَلَا يَرْضَىٰ لِعِبَادِهِ الْكُفْرَ وَإِن تَشْكُرُوا يَرْضَهُ لَكُمْ}
صدق الله العظيم [Surah Az-Zumar: 7]
O scholars of the Ummah, I ask you by the Almighty Allaah—by Him who brings the bones to life after they have decayed, the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and the Lord of the Mighty Throne—do you consider Imam Nasser Mohammed al-Yamani to be upon falsehood simply because he seeks to achieve the goal that is opposite to the goal of Satan regarding the will of their Lord?
And all praise is due to Allaah, who has supported me with a people whom Allaah loves and who love Him, though I did not know them, and many of them my eyes have never seen. So listen to my repeated ruling regarding them: I swear by Allaah—there is no deity except Him, and none worthy of worship besides Him—that their Lord will not be able to please them even with the dominion of Paradise, whose width is as the heavens and the earth, until He is pleased within.
And perhaps one of the questioners may wish to say: “O Nasser Mohammed, now that it has become clear to us the concept of Hasrah within the Self of Allaah over those tormented among His servants—excluding the devils—then surely this sorrow and Hasrah will continue in the Self of Allaah over them as long as they cry out in the Fire of Hell, and it will not depart until Allaah brings them out of the Fire and admits them into His Paradise. The question, O Nasser Mohammed, is: will this then be fulfilled after the wrongdoers taste the consequences of their deeds, since they are judged to be in eternal abiding in the prison of Hell?” Thereupon, I suffice with the answer found directly in the decisive Book from the Lord. Allaah the Exalted says:
{فَمِنْهُمْ شَقِيٌّ وَسَعِيدٌ ﴿١٠٥﴾ فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ شَقُوا فَفِي النَّارِ لَهُمْ فِيهَا زَفِيرٌ وَشَهِيقٌ ﴿١٠٦﴾ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا مَا دَامَتِ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْأَرْضُ إِلَّا مَا شَاءَ رَبُّكَ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ ﴿١٠٧﴾}
صدق الله العظيم [Surah Hud: 105–107]
And perhaps all scholars of the Muslims, Christians, and Jews may wish to say: “O Nasser Mohammed, are there in this nation servants of Allaah who will not be pleased even with the dominion of Paradise, whose width is the heavens and the earth, because they will not be pleased until the good pleasure of their Lord is achieved?” Thereupon the Imam Mahdi Nasser Mohammed al-Yamani responds to the questioners, saying: I swear by the One Who revealed the Book, Who drives the clouds, and Who defeated the allied forces, that indeed there are within this nation a people whom Allaah loves and who love Him. They will not be pleased with the Gardens of Bliss nor with its houris until the pleasure within their beloved Allaah, the Most Merciful of those who show mercy, is achieved.
And everyone among the people whom Allaah loves and who love Him will know this truth within themselves. Those are the ones who are certain that Nasser Mohammed al-Yamani is truly the Awaited Mahdi, without doubt or uncertainty, because he has informed them of the reality of the Greatest Name of Allaah, which they found to be the attribute of the pleasure of Allaah upon His servants. Thus they see that the attainment of the pleasure of Allaah upon His servants is indeed the greatest bliss, without doubt or uncertainty.
In line with the Words of Allaah the Exalted:
{وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا وَمَسَاكِنَ طَيِّبَةً فِي جَنَّاتِ عَدْنٍ وَرِضْوَانٌ مِّنَ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ (72)}
صدق الله العظيم
Surah: At-Tawbah—Chapter: 9—Verse: 72
And perhaps one of the questioners may wish to say: “Are these people infallible from sin?” Thereupon the Imam al-Mahdi Nasser Mohammed al-Yamani responds to the questioners, saying: Rather, they are like their Imam; perhaps the recording angels grow weary from the abundance of what is written of their sins. Yet Allaah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves.
And peace be upon the Messengers, and all praise belongs to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Your brother, Imam al-Mahdi Nasser Mohammed al-Yamani.
